The mission of the St. John’s Boys’ choir is to offer an enriching experience in music education with an emphasis in vocal music, as well as the socializing experience of shared enterprise, fellowship, cultural awareness and touring for boys ages 8-14. The choir promotes vocal music education in Central Minnesota and offers the unique experience of a well-trained boys’ choir to its audiences.
The St. John’s Boys’ Choir, under the leadership of music and artistic director Andre Heywood provides music education, leadership and social development training to hundreds of central Minnesota boys every year. The Boys’ Choir performs more than 50 concerts reaching an audience of 25,000 people!
The St. John’s Boys’ Choir was founded in 1981 by music director and conductor, Br. Paul Richards and the monks of St. John’s Abbey. Andre Heywood took over the baton when Br. Paul Richards retired in 2007 after 26 years of inspirational leadership. The choir has grown to include five divisions: the Concert, Junior Varsity and Training Choirs, Recorder Consort, and Stile Antico. In 1993 the choir became a self-incorporated nonprofit organization.
